Kneel & Pray
Kneel & Pray is a live Deep Purple album, recorded on 4 October 1969 at the Montreux Casino, the venue that burned down two years later. It appeared on Purple Records, with a UK and European release on 2006-09-28. The same recording is also known as Live in Montreux 69, and it first came out in 2004 as a limited edition digipak under the Kneel & Pray title.
It catches the band between Deep Purple (1969) and Deep Purple in Rock (1970), with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover in the line-up. Early performances of "Speed King" and "Child in Time" are here, both of which turned up on In Rock eight months later. The version of "Kentucky Woman" is the only known surviving recording of that song with Gillan and Glover. For anyone curious how the harder sound took shape, it's a useful snapshot.
