Smoke on the Water
Smoke on the Water is a 1998 compilation from Deep Purple, issued by PolyGram Special Markets and released in the US in the same year. It sits among the 25 compilation albums the band have put out, and it gathers their work under the title of their best-known song, filed under heavy metal and hard rock.
Deep Purple formed in early 1968 around Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, Ritchie Blackmore and Nick Simper, and their debut, Shades of Deep Purple, arrived that July. The line-up has changed many times since, and Paice is the only original member still in the band. A collection like this is a handy way into a long career, from the late 1960s through to the records of the 1990s.
