Rush
Rush's self-titled debut came out in March 1974 on Moon Records, the band's own label, before Mercury picked it up for release abroad later that year. It was recorded five years after the Canadian trio first formed, and it stands alone in their catalogue as the only album with original drummer John Rutsey behind the kit.
Anyone who knows the band for their later sprawling, conceptual work may be surprised by how direct this one is. The sound is straightforward hard rock, clearly in debt to early British heavy hitters, Led Zeppelin and Humble Pie above all. It's a snapshot of a band before the progressive ambitions took over, and well worth hearing for that reason: the starting point of a long run of studio albums that would stretch all the way to Clockwork Angels in 2012.
