Roll the Bones
Roll the Bones is Rush's fourteenth studio album, released on 3 September 1991. Made with the band and producer Rupert Hine, mostly at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, it carries on the move away from the keyboard-heavy sound of the 1980s towards something more guitar-led, a change that began with Presto. Funk and jazz colour the music, and the title track famously includes a rap section from bassist Geddy Lee.
Neil Peart's lyrics turn over chance, fate and the weight of circumstance, and the title is slang for rolling dice, a idea carried into Hugh Syme's Juno-winning cover. "Where's My Thing?", the band's first instrumental since 1981, earned a Grammy nomination. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, their highest US placing since Signals, and went platinum. Reviewers welcomed its renewed energy and melodic focus, though the rap divided opinion.
