Released on 18 November 2003, blink-182's self-titled fifth album arrived after the huge success of Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. The trio had taken a break for side projects, including Box Car Racer and Transplants, and returned wanting to focus on song structure and richer arrangements. The result is their longest record, and a darker, more expansive one, with interlinked songs that sit somewhere between pop-punk and post-hardcore.

They recorded in a rented San Diego mansion with producer Jerry Finn, filling it with vintage gear and experimental instruments. The lyrics turn to adulthood, hardship and global unrest, and Robert Smith of The Cure guests on a gothic collaboration. "Feeling This" and "I Miss You" were the best-known singles, and the album sold 2.2 million copies in the United States. It was their last record with Finn and their final new material before their first breakup.
