Weezer
Weezer's third album, known as the Green Album, came out on 15 May 2001 on Geffen. It arrived after the band's hiatus following Pinkerton, which had met with mixed reviews and modest sales. While the members worked on side projects, the fanbase grew online and Pinkerton's reputation improved. A comeback show at Japan's Summer Sonic Festival led to rehearsals and new recordings.
Rivers Cuomo answered Pinkerton's ambitious writing and confessional lyrics with simpler songs and less personal words. Ric Ocasek, who produced their debut, returned to the desk. Three singles followed: "Hash Pipe", "Island in the Sun" and "Photograph", with "Hash Pipe" charting on seven different charts worldwide. It is also the only Weezer album with bassist Mikey Welsh, who left a few months later. The record debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than 1.6 million copies.
