Lateralus is the third studio album by American band Tool, released on 15 May 2001 through Volcano Records. It followed Ænima and was made with the same producer, David Bottrill, working alongside the band. Sessions ran from October 2000 to January 2001 at several Los Angeles-area studios, including Cello Studios in Hollywood and a trio of North Hollywood rooms. It was the last Tool album Bottrill produced.

The record's reach was considerable. It went straight in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 555,200 copies in its first week, and later went triple platinum in the US. "Schism" won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2002. The album also sits at No. 123 on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "Definitive 200" list. A limited two-picture-disc vinyl edition in a holographic gatefold followed in 2005, a nice way to hear its progressive metal sprawl.
