Mutter
Mutter is Rammstein's third studio album, arriving on 2 April 2001 after Herzeleid and Sehnsucht. The title is German for "Mother", and the band's Berlin-born brand of Neue Deutsche Härte, a heavy blend of industrial metal, electronic textures and crunching guitar, is here turned towards a more sombre, theatrical mood. The sleeve image is a photograph of a fetus by Daniel and Geo Fuchs, and it signals that this is not a record out to make things comfortable.
What makes it worth hearing is how much came out of it. Six singles were released from the album, more than from any other Rammstein record, which says a lot about how many distinct songs the band packed into it. If you want to understand how they moved from their early breakthrough to a larger, more ambitious sound, this is a very good place to start. Riffology's article on the making of the album is a handy companion.
