Bullhead

Bullhead is the third studio album by the American band Melvins, released in January 1991 on Boner Records. It follows Gluey Porch Treatments (1987) and Ozma (1989), and arrives just before Lysol in 1992, so it sits at the start of a run of records that would shape the band's reputation for heavy, odd and stubborn rock.

The music draws on alternative metal, sludge metal and stoner rock, with grunge in the mix too, and that blend is the reason to seek it out. If you know Melvins mainly through their later, more sprawling catalogue, Bullhead shows the band at an early stage, already comfortable working in slow, weighty territory. It's a good record to put on when you want to hear where that sound was heading.
