Melvinmania: The Best of the Atlantic Years 1993-1996
Melvinmania: The Best of the Atlantic Years 1993-1996 is a compilation of the Melvins' stretch on Atlantic Records, released in September 2003 (18 August 2003 in the UK and Europe). It gathers fifteen tracks in three blocks of five, one block from each album the band made for the label: Houdini in 1993, Stoner Witch in 1994 and Stag in 1996.
It works as a quick tour through the band's major-label period, when their sludge metal sat alongside the rock of the day. Be aware that the band did not sanction the collection, and the liner notes get things wrong. They suggest Kurt Cobain produced and drummed on a number of tracks, when he only added percussion to "Spread Eagle Beagle" from Houdini. For the full picture, the three parent albums are the place to go.
