Revolver
Revolver is the seventh studio album by the Beatles, released on 5 August 1966 on Parlophone alongside the double A-side single "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine". It was the last record they made before giving up live performance, and it pushes the studio further than Rubber Soul had the year before. With no plans to play the songs on stage, the band freely used automatic double tracking, varispeed, reversed tapes and instruments beyond their usual line-up.
The results range widely. "Tomorrow Never Knows" pairs a heavy Indian drone with a collage of tape loops, "Eleanor Rigby" is a song about loneliness backed only by a string octet, and "Love You To" ventures into Hindustani classical music. Klaus Voormann's cover, mixing line drawing with photo collage, won a Grammy. Many critics now rank the album above Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as the group's finest, and its influence on psychedelic rock and progressive rock is hard to overstate.
