The Early Tapes of The Beatles
The Early Tapes of The Beatles is a compilation released on 10 December 1984 by Polydor. It was the first digital repackaging of The Beatles' First!, a German compilation from 1964 that gathered Tony Sheridan and Beatles recordings made in Hamburg between 1961 and 1963. This CD edition adds two extra tracks and an extended version of "Ya Ya". It was reissued in 2004 on Universal Music's Spectrum label with a different design.
Most of the songs are led by Sheridan, with the group credited as "The Beat Brothers" on some. The Beatles themselves appear on tracks 1 to 5, 7, 10 and 11. Those include John Lennon singing lead on "Ain't She Sweet" and "Cry for a Shadow", an instrumental written and played by the band alone. For anyone curious about their Hamburg beginnings, it is a useful listen. The CD also restores the unofficial title "If You Love Me, Baby" for "Take Out Some Insurance on Me, Baby".
