The Early Beatles
The Early Beatles is a compilation that appeared on Capitol Records on 22 March 1965. It was the band's sixth album for the label and their eighth for the American market. Its eleven tracks had all come out before, on the Vee-Jay Records release Introducing... The Beatles in January 1964, so this was Capitol's way of bringing that earlier material into its own catalogue.
The sleeve used the photograph that appears on the back of the British LP Beatles for Sale. For listeners now, the record is a snapshot of how the group's first American releases were put together, with the early songs reshuffled for a new audience. It also earned a place in Robert Christgau's "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings, which appeared in his Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies in 1981.
