The Beatles With Tony Sheridan and Guests
This MGM Records compilation, released on 3 February 1964, collects some of the earliest recordings associated with The Beatles. It arrived in America just as interest in the group was growing, and it looks back to the days before they had become a worldwide name.
The centrepiece is "Cry for a Shadow", an instrumental written and recorded by the band themselves. The other three tracks find the young group backing fellow British guitarist and singer Tony Sheridan. It is a rock and roll record, and its appeal lies in hearing the Beatles as a fledgling outfit, working as accompanists rather than as the stars they were about to be.
