Yellow Submarine
Yellow Submarine is the Beatles' tenth studio album, the soundtrack to the animated film that premiered in London in July 1968. It came out in January 1969 on Apple Records. Only six of its tracks are by the band: four new songs, plus the earlier singles "Yellow Submarine" and "All You Need Is Love". George Martin's orchestral re-recordings of the film's score fill the rest.
The Beatles saw it as a contractual obligation, having been asked for four new songs. Some were written for the film, while others were unreleased tracks from other sessions. It followed the self-titled "White Album" by two months, and the band didn't see it as a major release. Even so, it reached the top 5 in both the UK and the US. Critics have been mixed on it, but it is an intriguing side-door into the band's psychedelic period, and the film's songs were later gathered in a fuller remix, Yellow Submarine Songtrack.
