Yesterday and Today
Yesterday and Today is a North American Beatles album, released in the United States and Canada in June 1966. Capitol assembled it from songs held back from its versions of the band's recent EMI albums, plus tracks that had come out on non-album singles. Its eleven tracks draw on Help! and Rubber Soul, and add three new 1966 recordings that listeners elsewhere would meet on Revolver. The title nods to "Yesterday".
Most people know it for its cover. The so-called "butcher cover" showed the band in white smocks, surrounded by decapitated baby dolls and raw meat. Some read it as a jab at fan adoration, the band pointed to the Vietnam War, and others saw a protest against Capitol's habit of "butchering" their albums. Retailers balked, and Capitol swapped in a photo of the group around a steamer trunk. Original copies became prized by collectors, some of whom peeled back the top layer of pasted covers hoping to find the banned image underneath.
