Introducing… The Beatles
Introducing… The Beatles was the band's first studio album to appear in the United States, issued by Vee-Jay Records on 10 January 1964. It had originally been pencilled in for July 1963, so by the time it arrived the group's American story was already being written elsewhere. Rock, pop rock and a touch of folk rock all find a place on it.
The timing worked against it. Capitol's Meet The Beatles! followed ten days later, yet it reached the US album chart a week earlier. That one spent eleven consecutive weeks at No. 1, while this record sat at No. 2 for nine. Legal disputes surrounded it, but Vee-Jay was allowed to keep selling it until late 1964, by which point it had passed 1.3 million copies. It earned gold and platinum certification from the RIAA in July 2014, a neat reminder of how many people first heard the Beatles through it.
