Magical Mystery Tour
Magical Mystery Tour is the Beatles' soundtrack to their 1967 television film of the same name. It appeared as a double EP in the UK and as a full LP in the US and Canada, where Capitol Records released it on 27 November 1967. The American version added five songs first issued as singles that year. Paul McCartney started the project in April 1967, but it stalled until manager Brian Epstein died in late August. Recording then ran alongside filming and editing.
The record carries on the studio experimentation of Sgt. Pepper and the psychedelic sound they had pursued since Revolver. McCartney wrote "The Fool on the Hill", John Lennon brought "I Am the Walrus", and George Harrison offered "Blue Jay Way". The film got a mixed reception, but the music did well, topping Billboard's album chart for eight weeks and earning a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Since 1987 the American LP has been counted as the band's ninth studio album.
