CYR

CYR is the eleventh studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins, released on 27 November 2020 on Sumerian Records. Billy Corgan produced it himself, steering the band towards a synth-pop sound and deliberately chasing something contemporary in the studio. Ten of its songs arrived as singles before the full record appeared, so much of it was already familiar to listeners by release day.

It follows the 2018 reunion-era album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun., and comes ahead of the three-act ATUM in 2022. It is worth hearing for how far it leans into electronic textures, a clear change from the guitar-heavy records that made the band's name. A five-part animated series, In Ashes, written by Corgan and directed by Mike Anderson, accompanied it and supplied the videos for five of the tracks.
