Rising
Rising is the second album by Rainbow, released on 17 May 1976. After the debut, Ritchie Blackmore let everyone go except singer and lyricist Ronnie James Dio, then built a new band around the pair: drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboardist Tony Carey. They worked up material through long jam sessions, then recorded at Musicland Studios in West Germany with producer Martin Birch in February 1976.
It is a compact record of just six tracks, with two epics of more than eight minutes filling side two. Critics praised Blackmore's guitar, Dio's commanding voice and the band's tight chemistry, and some saw Rainbow as the heir to Deep Purple. It sold moderately and fell short of Blackmore's hopes in America, which pushed him towards a more accessible sound later on. Even so, it has long been regarded as a classic, and "Stargazer" is a landmark of heavy metal.
