Live Through This
Live Through This is the second studio album by Hole, released on 12 April 1994 on Geffen. It followed 1991's Pretty on the Inside and found the band moving away from that record's raw hardcore edge towards sharper melodies and tighter song structures. Courtney Love wanted it to surprise anyone who thought the band had no softer side, without losing its harshness. Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie produced it, with Scott Litt and J Mascis handling the mixing.
Love's words circle around beauty, motherhood, milk imagery, anti-elitism and violence against women. The album is the only Hole record to feature bassist Kristen Pfaff. Critics rated it highly at the time, and it went platinum in the US in April 1995. Rolling Stone placed it at number 106 in its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums, and NME ranked it 84th in its own list. It's the record to start with if you want to hear Hole at their most focused.
