Thirty Years of Maximum R&B
Thirty Years of Maximum R&B is a four-CD box set from the Who, released on 5 July 1994. It follows the band from their earliest days as the High Numbers in 1964 through to their 1991 cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting". Polydor handled the release internationally, with MCA putting it out in the US; since 2003 it has been issued there by Geffen.
The set mixes well-known album tracks with rarities, and also folds in interviews, commercials and sketches, so it plays as something closer to a scrapbook of the band's career than a straight hits collection. A video, Thirty Years of Maximum R&B Live, also came out in 1994. For anyone wanting the whole sweep of the Who in one place, with a few oddities along the way, it makes a rewarding listen.
