Live at Leeds
Live at Leeds is the Who's first live album, taken from a show at the University of Leeds Refectory on 14 February 1970 and released on 11 May 1970. It features the classic line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon, and remains the only live record the band made with that foursome.
It arrived as the follow-up to Tommy. The band had taped several shows on the Tommy tours but disliked the sound, so they booked Leeds, and Hull City Hall the next day, specifically to capture a live record. Six songs made the cut, and the sleeve was pressed to look like a bootleg. What you hear is far from the rock opera: hard-hitting arrangements of the kind that defined their concerts. Critics have often ranked it among the greatest live albums, and even the greatest rock recordings, ever made.
