Anthrax are a New York City heavy metal band, formed in 1981 by rhythm guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. They were among the first thrash bands to emerge from the East Coast, and they count as one of the Big Four of the genre alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Ian is the only constant member, with drummer Charlie Benante and bassist Frank Bello long-serving fixtures too.

The classic run began once Joey Belladonna joined in 1984. Among the Living (1987) brought their first mainstream success, followed by State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time, which earned a Grammy nomination. With John Bush on vocals, Sound of White Noise (1993) reached number seven on the Billboard 200 and gave them the radio hit "Only". Belladonna returned for Worship Music (2011), and the band's twelfth album, Cursum Perficio, arrived in 2026.
