The Greater of Two Evils finds Anthrax revisiting their own early catalogue. Rather than writing new material, the band re-recorded 14 songs first released between 1983 and 1990, with John Bush singing parts originally handled by Neil Turbin and Joey Belladonna. Fans chose the final track listing by voting on the band's website, and the group then played the songs "live" in the studio over two days. It came out in November 2004.

The record sits at an interesting point in the Anthrax story, as the last full-length before the band reunited with Belladonna and guitarist Dan Spitz. It is worth hearing for the contrast: familiar thrash and speed metal numbers given a different voice and a rawer, band-in-a-room approach. Comedian and fan Brian Posehn contributed the sleeve notes.
