The Cure's self-titled twelfth studio album arrived on 25 June 2004 and was the band's first for Geffen Records. It followed Bloodflowers (2000) and came before 4:13 Dream (2008). Robert Smith co-produced it with Ross Robinson, an American producer, which makes it an interesting pairing to seek out in the band's catalogue.

The record spawned one single, "The End of the World". It also marks the last studio album to feature guitarist Perry Bamonte, who died in 2025. For anyone tracing the band's story from the post-punk and gothic rock of their early years through to their later work, it is a notable chapter, a new label and a new production partnership at a point when the band had been making records for over two decades.
