Pretties for You
Pretties for You is the debut album by Alice Cooper, released on 25 June 1969 on Straight Records. At that point Alice Cooper was the name of the whole band, though singer Vincent Furnier used it as his stage name too. Frank Zappa, his manager Herb Cohen and fellow Mother of Invention Ian Underwood produced it alongside Furnier, and the sound is a long way from the tight hard rock that later made the group famous.
Expect psychedelic, progressive leanings: unusual time signatures, jarring syncopation, sound effects and a wide spread of influences. "Levity Ball" shows the pull of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, whom the band spent time with on the Floyd's US tour. The record flopped, though it is a fascinating starting point. "Reflected", the first single, was later reworked as "Elected" on Billion Dollar Babies.
