Ashes of the Wake is Lamb of God's third studio album and their first for a major label, arriving on Epic in August 2004. It followed New American Gospel and As the Palaces Burn, and it sits at the point where the Virginia band's groove-driven metal reached a much bigger stage. It entered the Billboard 200 at number 27, with 35,000 copies sold in its first week.

The record has held its standing well. Guitar World placed it 49th in its list of the greatest guitar albums of all time, and Metal Hammer ranked it fifth among the greatest metal albums of the 21st century. It went on to become the band's best-seller, passing 400,000 copies in the United States by 2014, and it was certified gold there in February 2016. For anyone tracing how modern groove metal found its audience, it's an essential stop.
