Soulfly

Soulfly are a Brazilian-American metal band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997 by Max Cavalera, the former Sepultura frontman who left that group in 1996. Their sound blends several strands of metal, from groove to thrash to nu metal, with Brazilian tribal and world music, an approach that carries on from his earlier band. Early lyrics dealt with spirituality, politics and religion, while later records turned to war, violence, slavery, hatred and anger.

Their self-titled debut arrived in 1998, and Primitive followed in 2000, reaching number 32 on the Billboard 200, their highest placing. Soulfly, Primitive, Prophecy and Dark Ages are the albums fans return to most. Thirteen studio albums have appeared in all, the latest being Chama in 2025, and the band has earned a Gold certification from the RIAA.
