Soulfly's self-titled debut came out on 21 April 1998 through Roadrunner Records. It was the first album to feature Max Cavalera since he left Sepultura two years earlier, so it carries the weight of a fresh start. It was also made in memory of his stepson, who had died, and that gives the record a personal edge beyond the change of band.

Sitting between heavy metal and the alternative and nu-metal sounds of the late 1990s, it launched a catalogue that now runs to thirteen studio albums, from this first record to Chama in 2025. It has been certified gold by the RIAA, and in 2021 Revolver named it among its "20 Essential Nu-Metal Albums". If you want to hear where Cavalera went next, this is the place to begin.
