Gojira are a French metal band from Ondres, formed in 1996 under the name Godzilla and renamed in 2001. The line-up has stayed the same ever since: brothers Joe Duplantier on vocals and guitar and Mario Duplantier on drums, with Christian Andreu on guitar and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass. Their sound blends progressive, technical death and groove metal, and their lyrics often turn to spirituality, philosophy and environmentalism. The band have long been active in environmental, human rights and animal rights causes.

Terra Incognita and The Link built their name at home, but From Mars to Sirius in 2005 took them further, with "Backbone" and "Flying Whales" among its highlights. The Way of All Flesh followed in 2008, and Magma in 2016 was the breakthrough, a more direct record that reached number 24 on the Billboard 200. Fortitude in 2021 topped the US sales chart in its first week, and in 2024 they played the Olympic opening ceremony in France.
