Beneath the Remains is Sepultura's third studio album, released on 7 April 1989. The Brazilian band had spent their early records in a rawer, black metal-influenced style, and here they sharpened it into death-tinged thrash, with better production and stronger songwriting than before. It followed Schizophrenia from 1987 and was their first release through Roadracer Records.

This is the record that took Sepultura beyond Brazil and made the extreme metal scene sit up and listen. No singles came from it, but "Inner Self" became their first music video. It also points the way towards the more technical, progressive sound of Arise in 1991. Max Cavalera felt the band had really found their style here, and Decibel agreed, inducting it into its Hall of Fame in January 2013, which made Sepultura the first band with more than one album in that company.
