Lions
Lions is the sixth studio album by the Black Crowes, released on 7 May 2001. It was their first record for V2 Records after leaving Columbia, and the only studio album to feature guitarist Audley Freed. Don Was produced the sessions, which took place in New York City across January and February. With Greg Rzab gone and no replacement yet found, bass duties were shared between Rich Robinson and Was himself.
It sits between By Your Side and the hiatus that followed the touring, and the band did not return until 2005. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 20, its highest position. Reviews were mixed: the sound drew praise, though many felt the songs lacked staying power, and some heard an imitation of influences such as Led Zeppelin. If you like your Crowes in a southern, bluesy, hard rock mood, it is worth hearing for how the band sounds in that setting.
