By Your Side
By Your Side is the fifth studio album by The Black Crowes, released in 1999 on Columbia, the only record they made for that label. It arrived after guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Johnny Colt left in 1997. Audley Freed and Sven Pipien stepped in, though Rich Robinson played all the guitar parts himself. Kevin Shirley produced the sessions in New York City, where the band mixed songs written in the studio with reworked material, including tracks from the shelved 1997 album Band.
Many reviewers welcomed its return to the straightforward approach of Shake Your Money Maker, and praised Chris Robinson's singing and Rich's guitar playing. Some heard too much Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones in it. It reached number 26 on the Billboard 200, and the band toured theatres, then opened for Aerosmith across Europe.
