Album
Behind the Mask
Behind the Mask is Fleetwood Mac's fifteenth studio album, released in April 1990 on Warner Bros. It was the first record made after Lindsey Buckingham's departure, though he did play acoustic guitar on the title track. Billy Burnette and Rick Vito stepped in, turning the band into a six-piece with four singer-songwriters. Stevie Nicks co-wrote "Freedom" with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who would join the band himself in 2018.
It never matched the success of Tango in the Night. "Save Me" reached the Top 40 in both the US and Canada, and the album barely made the US Top 20, though it went Gold there. In the UK it entered the chart at number 1 and went platinum. Dave Gorton's cover, made because the band preferred not to appear on it, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Album Package. Nicks and Vito left after the tour that followed.
