Greatest Hits gathers Fleetwood Mac's output from the Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham years, running from the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac through to 1987's Tango in the Night. It also adds two songs recorded for the collection. Warner Bros. Records released it in November 1988, and it shares only a title with the 1971 compilation of the same name.

That earlier set looked back at the Peter Green era, while this one leaves out early favourites such as "Albatross" and "Oh Well" and sticks to the band's later chapter. It has proved a lasting seller. In the UK it reached number three on release and has returned to the chart several times, earning a triple platinum certification. In the US it peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200 and is certified 8× platinum. For anyone wanting the post-1975 band in one sitting, it does the job neatly.
