Mental Funeral
Mental Funeral is the second album by American death metal band Autopsy, released on 22 April 1991 through Peaceville. It followed Severed Survival and carries on in the same vein, folding doom metal into death metal's brutality. The band recorded it at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco, and they have said that very little mixing was done, which fits its raw, unpolished character.
Bathory is among the extreme metal acts whose influence runs through the music, while the lyrics dwell on gruesome subjects such as necrophilia. Listeners were divided when it first appeared, but opinion has shifted a great deal since. It is now regarded as one of the most influential albums in death metal's history, and it is a good place to start if you want to hear where the genre's murkier, slower side took shape.
