Gothic
Gothic is the second studio album by Paradise Lost, the British band who followed their 1990 debut Lost Paradise with this record on Peaceville. It came out on 19 March 1991. At the time it was mostly described as death-doom, but it has since come to be seen as the record that defined gothic metal and, in a sense, gave the genre its name.
That makes it a key moment in the band's story, and a good place to start if you want to hear where the style took shape. The album has been remastered and reissued twice. The 2003 edition adds two remixed songs from Lost Paradise, and the 2008 edition comes with a bonus DVD of a rare live performance. The band played the whole record at Roadburn Festival in 2016 and released that show on Bandcamp.
