Shades of God
Shades of God is the third studio album by Paradise Lost, the British band who had already put out Lost Paradise in 1990 and Gothic in 1991. It came out on 14 July 1992 and still sits within the death-doom world of those earlier records, with heavy, weighty instrumentation and growled vocals leading the way.
What makes it worth hearing is where it catches the band in motion. You can hear the first signs of a move towards the more melodic, gothic metal sound that would define the follow-up, Icon, without the group having left their rougher roots behind. For anyone tracing how Paradise Lost went from doom-laden heaviness to something more polished and tuneful, this is the record where that change begins to show.
