Album
Mellow Gold
Mellow Gold is Beck's third studio album and his major label debut, released on 1 March 1994. It arrived after Golden Feelings and Stereopathetic Soulmanure, and it brought his scruffy, home-made instincts to a much bigger stage. Geffen put it out, though the sleeve carried the DGC name.
The record mixes rock, hip-hop, folk, blues, psychedelia and country, with lyrics that are ironic and witty. Its slacker rock and anti-folk leanings give it a loose, offhand feel, and its anti-commercial attitude turned out to be part of the appeal. It reached number thirteen in the United States and went platinum there, selling over 1.2 million copies by July 2008. If you want to hear where Beck's genre-hopping began to reach a wide audience, before Odelay arrived in 1996, this is the place to start.
