The 21st Century Guide to King Crimson, Volume 1: 1969–1974
This four-CD box set gathers King Crimson's first era, running from the band's beginnings in 1969 to their first break-up in 1974. It mixes studio recordings with live performances, so it works as a trail through the group's early years rather than a simple run of album tracks.
It came out in November 2004 and is the first part of a two-volume overview. Volume Two, covering 1981 to 2003, followed in 2005, and a two-disc condensed edition of both appeared in 2006. The period here takes in the albums from In the Court of the Crimson King through to Red, so it suits anyone who wants the progressive rock band's seventies story in one place, with the live material adding a view of how they sounded on stage.
