The Great Deceiver
The Great Deceiver is a four-disc live box set drawn from King Crimson's concerts of 1973 and 1974, released on 16 November 1992. It follows Frame by Frame, the career-spanning box set that appeared the year before, and takes its name from a song on Starless and Bible Black. The same four musicians play throughout: Robert Fripp on guitar and keyboards, John Wetton on bass and vocals, David Cross on violin and keyboards, and Bill Bruford on drums. Percussionist Jamie Muir had left in early 1973, so he is not heard here.
The heart of the set is the band's concert in Providence, Rhode Island on 30 June 1974, presented complete across the first two discs. It was the second-to-last show by this line-up, which makes it a close look at the group just before it came to an end. The remaining discs gather further performances from the same two years. In 2007 the set was reissued as two separate double-CD volumes with new artwork.
