Live in Mainz: March 30, 1974
Live in Mainz captures King Crimson on stage at the Eltzer Hof in Mainz, West Germany, on 30 March 1974. It came out in 2001 through the King Crimson Collector's Club, and the recording was taken straight from the soundboard, as with other shows from the band's European tour of early 1974. John Wetton, the band's bass player, wrote the liner notes.
It belongs to the period between Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Red, with Starless and Bible Black also released in 1974. What makes it worth hearing is the amount of spontaneous playing: four tracks, "The Savage", "Arabica", "Atria" and "Trio", were improvised on the night. For anyone curious about how this line-up worked without a net, it is a revealing document.
