Beat
Beat is King Crimson's ninth studio album, released on 18 June 1982 on E'G. It follows Discipline from 1981 and features the same four players: Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. That made it the first King Crimson album to keep the line-up of the record before it, a notable thing for a band whose personnel had changed repeatedly in the years since 1969.
For anyone who knows Crimson only through the early symphonic records or the heavier mid-seventies work, Beat shows the band in its 1980s guise, sitting in the rock, progressive rock and art rock camps. It's the middle chapter of a trio of albums by this group, sitting between Discipline and Three of a Perfect Pair, and it's worth hearing as a snapshot of a settled and distinctive line-up at work.
