A Young Person’s Guide to King Crimson
A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson is a two-LP compilation released by Island in 1975, with the band already split. Robert Fripp chose the tracks himself, drawing on every studio album from In the Court of the Crimson King to Red, with only Lizard left out. The title may nod to Benjamin Britten's orchestral primer or to Leonard Bernstein's television series, which suits a set meant to introduce newcomers to the band.
The package is as much a reason to seek it out as the music. The gatefold sleeve carries paintings by Scottish artist Fergus Hall, and inside is a photo-filled booklet on the band's gigs and key moments, assembled from Fripp's own archive. The only CD edition came out in Japan in 1990, as a two-disc set that keeps the vinyl running order and includes a smaller copy of the booklet.
