Ladies of the Road
Ladies of the Road is a two-CD live set from King Crimson, released on 12 November 2002. The recordings come from 1971 and 1972, and the title borrows from a song on Islands, though that song isn't played here. Most of the material was drawn from the band's Collector's Club releases, which were limited-run concert recordings, studio sessions and radio sessions.
The first disc gathers performances by the band's second touring line-up: Robert Fripp, Boz Burrell, Mel Collins and Ian Wallace, with Peter Sinfield running the soundboard, VCS3 synthesizer and lights. The second disc is the oddity. "Schizoid Men" stitches guitar and saxophone solos from several 1972 American performances of "21st Century Schizoid Man" into one 46-minute piece in eleven parts. It never returns to the song itself, stops abruptly, and after a minute of silence tacks on a hidden final section. It's worth hearing for the band's improvising.
