MTV Unplugged
MTV Unplugged is Alanis Morissette's first live album, recorded for the television series of the same name and released by Maverick in November 1999. It followed Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, and it gathers twelve tracks drawn mainly from her first two international albums. Alongside them sit two songs previously unreleased on record, "No Pressure over Cappuccino" and "Princes Familiar", plus the b-side "These R the Thoughts". "King of Pain", a cover of The Police song, also appears.
What makes it worth hearing is the way the songs are reshaped. The vocals are cleaner, the arrangements slower, and "You Oughta Know" is reinvented quite drastically. "No Pressure over Cappuccino", a ballad written soon after Jagged Little Pill, was inspired by her twin brother, Wade. The record hints at the softer direction she would take later, notably on the acoustic version of Jagged Little Pill and its accompanying tour.
