Hymns
Hymns is the sixth studio album by Godflesh, the English industrial metal band, and it came out in October 2001 on Music for Nations. It was the last record they made before splitting in 2002, and only the second to use a live drummer rather than a drum machine. Its production was troubled, which makes it something of a closing chapter in the group's first run.
The band set out to step away from the tightly regimented industrial sound that defined them, aiming for something closer to traditional hard rock. That makes it an interesting listen alongside the albums either side of it in the catalogue. Godflesh reformed in 2010 and returned in 2014 with A World Lit Only by Fire, so Hymns stands as the farewell before a long gap. It is worth hearing for the sound of a band pushing against its own template.
