Godflesh

Godflesh is the debut EP from the Birmingham industrial metal band of the same name, first released in 1988 through Swordfish Records. Justin Broadrick and bassist G. C. Green, who had earlier played together as Fall of Because, recorded and produced it over two months. Later reissues on Earache Records added two extra songs. It reached number 20 on the UK Indie Chart, a surprise underground success for a record with no singles or videos behind it.

It is often overshadowed by 1989's Streetcleaner, but it deserves its own attention. It was among the first industrial metal releases, and its sound helped shape the genre: programmed drum beats, heavy metal guitar and an unusual emphasis on bass. The band's name and the EP's title reflect an effort to join music's deep emotional pull with its harsher, more physical side. A fan-made video for "Avalanche Master Song" has since been made official by the band.
