A World Lit Only by Fire
A World Lit Only by Fire is Godflesh's seventh studio album, and the one that brought the band back after a long silence. It is their first full-length since Hymns in 2001, following the group's split in 2002. Justin Broadrick put it out on his own label, Avalanche Recordings, in October 2014, after the digital singles "New Dark Ages" and "Imperator" and the Decline & Fall EP.
The sound is heavy and relentless: repetitive machine percussion, Broadrick's eight-string guitar and B. C. Green's distorted bass, with low, guttural vocals on human brutality and the corruption of power, an idea drawn partly from the book that gave the album its title. Both men wanted more than a reunion cash-in, and the long recording and revision process shows. Exclaim! gave it a perfect score, and Terrorizer named it the best album of 2014.
